Mold on sub floorWhy it is so important to call an experienced & certified mold remediation company?

There are thousands of species of mold on earth. The mold that has received the most “press coverage” is Stachrybotrys chartarum referred to it as the “black mold” and is one of the many mycotoxins-producing molds. It takes under ideal conditions between 7 to 12 days to begin colonizing; however this mold has been associated with prolonged water damage of building materials. There are other molds most commonly found in remediation work like Penicillium and Aspergillus. These two are xerophilic, which means they can grow in low moisture environments. In fact, you don’t want any of these or other type of mold in your walls or house.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) in the document Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings (2001) concluded that, “When moisture occurs and mold growth results, building occupants may begin to report odors and a variety of health problems, such as headaches, breathing difficulties, skin irritation, allergenic reactions (Sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, skin rash (dermatitis)) The USEPA document a brief guide to Mold, Moisture and your home says “the key to mold control is moisture control”. You should act rapidly if you’re having water damage or if you see any visible mold on your walls.. Contact a professional mold remediation company to remove and clean the mold before it becomes a more serious problem for you.

In Virginia there are not yet regulations on how to remove or clean mold, however any professional mold remediation company here in VA or any other part of USA should follow IICRC S520 Standard and Reference and Guide for Professional Mold Remediation and IICRC S500 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage Restoration.

Air samples resultsMold testing and Air Samples:

Is sampling for mold needed? “In most cases, if visible mold growth is present, sampling is unnecessary. Since no EPA or other federal limits have been set for mold or mold spores, sampling cannot be used to check a building's compliance with federal mold standards” “ You may consider  sampling as part of your site evaluation in specific instances, such as:

  • Cases where litigation is involved
  • The source(s) of the mold contamination is unclear
  • Health concerns are a problem

Pre- and post-remediation sampling may also be useful in determining whether remediation efforts have been effective. After remediation, the types and concentrations of mold in indoor air samples should be similar or lower to what is found outdoors.

Sampling for mold should be conducted by an independent professional (Industrial Hygienist, Microbiologist or Indoor Environmental Professional) with specific experience in designing mold sampling protocols, sampling methods and interpretation of results. The sampling should not be performed for the same company doing the mold remediation otherwise that will create a conflict of interest.

Mold and Water InspectionWhat does a Mold Remediation or Removal Company do?

It is important to know what to expect from us when we arrive.

A professional, certified and experience mold remediator should inspect the affected area and surroundings thoroughly. In most cases and with the help of moisture meters find the source of moisture or what is causing the mold problem and prepare a cleaning protocol. If there is any person with the compromised inmune system, the remediatior may recommend the participation of an Industrial Hygienist, Microbiologist or Indoor environmental professional.

Is there anything you can do while help arrives?

You may cover (if small) the affected visible area with plastic to prevent any disturbance to the mold spores.

We will take care of the rest!
